Tally vs Zoho Books vs Vyapar: the honest accounting software comparison

There is no single winner. If your chartered accountant works in Tally every day, your internet is unreliable, and billing happens on one premises, TallyPrime fits. If you and your team need the books from different locations, Zoho Books fits. If you run a single shop and bill mainly from a phone, Vyapar fits and costs the least. The honest comparison is on total cost over three years, users, and GST work, not on the headline price. Prices in this article are as of November 2026, ex GST unless stated.

The short version

Your situation Sensible starting point
One shop, billing from a phone, simple stock Vyapar
CA led books, offline work, deep inventory on Windows TallyPrime
Owner led books, multiple locations, bank feeds and approvals Zoho Books
Turnover up to Rs 25 lakh, very low invoice volume Zoho Books Free
Three or more people billing at the same time on one network TallyPrime Gold or Zoho Books paid plan

Four facts decide most purchases. First, TallyPrime is a perpetual licence plus an annual service subscription called TSS. Second, Zoho Books is a subscription per organisation, so three users on Standard cost no more than one. Third, Vyapar prices differ for mobile only, desktop only, and desktop plus mobile, and its plan names vary across its own pages. Fourth, GST features are not equal: check e-invoicing, e-way bills and return reports on the exact plan you will buy. If e-invoicing applies to you, read GST e-invoicing: does the Rs 5 crore rule apply to your business before you decide.

What each product actually is

TallyPrime is desktop first software for Windows. It installs on your computer, works offline, and stores data locally unless you pay for a separate cloud access service. That design suits factories and trading firms where the accounts team sits in one office and the internet cannot be trusted during billing hours.

Zoho Books is cloud accounting. There is nothing to install. You sign in from a browser or the mobile app, and the same books are visible to the owner, the accountant and a branch user at the same time. That design suits service firms, traders with more than one location, and owners who check figures from home or while travelling.

Vyapar is mobile first. It began as an Android billing app and also offers a Windows desktop version. It works offline and syncs when a connection returns. That design suits a single counter shop, a small distributor, or a proprietor who raises bills from the phone through the day.

None of this makes one product better in general. It makes each product better for a specific way of working. A firm that forces a cloud tool onto a premises with poor connectivity will struggle. A firm that forces a single PC licence onto three billing staff will also struggle.

TallyPrime prices, as of November 2026

Item Price ex GST
TallyPrime Silver, lifetime licence, single user Rs 22,500
TallyPrime Gold, lifetime licence, multi user on a local network Rs 67,500
Rental, Silver From Rs 750 per month
Rental, Gold From Rs 2,250 per month
TSS renewal, Silver Rs 4,500 per year
TSS renewal, Gold Rs 13,500 per year

TSS stands for Tally Software Services. It covers product upgrades, statutory updates for GST and other laws, and connected services such as e-invoicing and e-way bills through Tally. A new perpetual licence includes the first year of TSS. After that you renew each year if you want those services to continue.

You can keep using TallyPrime for basic offline accounting without renewing TSS. The licence does not expire. What stops is the flow of updates and connected services. For a GST registered business, that distinction matters, because rates, formats and portal requirements change. Most active businesses should budget for TSS as an annual cost, not treat the licence price as the full price.

Rental is worth considering if you want to test TallyPrime, if you have a short project, or if cash flow makes a large one time payment difficult. Compare rental over the period you expect to use it. Rental for three years can approach the licence plus TSS route, so run the arithmetic for your own horizon.

Zoho Books prices, as of November 2026

Zoho Books is priced per organisation per month. The table below shows the price billed annually. Monthly billing costs more for the higher plans. Taxes are extra.

Plan Per month, billed annually Users included Invoices per year
Free Rs 0 1 user plus 1 accountant Up to 1,000
Standard Rs 749 3 5,000
Professional Rs 1,499 5 10,000
Premium Rs 2,999 10 25,000
Elite Rs 4,999 (Rs 5,999 monthly) 15 1,00,000
Ultimate Rs 7,999 (Rs 9,599 monthly) 25 1,00,000

The free plan is free while your revenue for the financial year does not exceed Rs 25 lakh. That limit is confirmed on Zoho's own pricing page. Claims elsewhere that the free plan runs to Rs 50 lakh or Rs 1.5 crore are wrong. Once revenue crosses Rs 25 lakh, you move to a paid plan.

Add-ons change the real price. An extra user costs Rs 150 per user per month billed annually, or Rs 180 on monthly billing. Payroll is available from the Premium plan, with an employee add-on of Rs 60 per employee per month billed annually, or Rs 75 monthly. If you have 10 users on Standard, you do not pay for 10 full plans. You pay for Standard plus seven extra users. Do that calculation before you compare Zoho with Tally.

Standard and above include GST reports and filing support and e-invoicing features as listed on the pricing page. Professional adds inventory depth, multi currency and project features that a pure trader may not need. Premium adds payroll, budgets and custom modules. Elite and Ultimate are for larger invoice volumes and advanced inventory or analytics. Most small firms should start at Standard or Professional and upgrade only when a limit actually bites.

Vyapar prices, as of November 2026

Vyapar sells by device combination, which is where buyers get confused. The package research recorded these figures from the vendor's pages: Desktop plus Mobile Silver at Rs 3,799 per year, Gold at Rs 4,099 per year, Retail Pro at Rs 8,999 per year and Platinum at Rs 9,999 per year, all plus GST at 18 percent. Mobile only plans were listed as Free at Rs 0, Silver at Rs 699 per year, Gold at Rs 799 per year and Platinum at Rs 2,099 per year.

Treat those as indicative, not final. Vyapar shows different plan names and discounted prices across its many vertical pages and reseller listings. In November 2026 checks, desktop plus mobile combinations were also listed around Rs 4,399 for Silver and Rs 4,799 for Gold. The lesson is practical: open the pricing screen for your exact device combination, note the renewal price and not only the first year discount, and pay only after you confirm what is included for e-way bills, multiple firms and users.

Vyapar plans list GSTR reports. For a small shop that bills, tracks stock and hands reports to a CA for filing, that is usually enough. For heavier reconciliation, multi GSTIN work or detailed audit trails, test the reports carefully during the trial before you rely on them.

GST and compliance fit

Need TallyPrime Zoho Books Vyapar
Works fully offline Yes No, cloud based Yes, with sync
GST reports Yes Yes, Standard and above as listed Listed in plans
E-invoicing Through connected services, needs internet and active TSS Listed on pricing page for paid plans Check current plan screen
E-way bills Through connected services, needs internet and active TSS Available in the Zoho ecosystem, check plan Check limits per plan
Multi GSTIN work Possible, setup dependent Stronger on higher plans, locations are an add-on Limited, confirm before buying
CA familiarity in India Very high Growing Lower for complex audits

Two warnings belong here. First, software does not make you compliant by itself. If your turnover crossed the e-invoicing threshold, the invoice must carry an IRN and a signed QR code whichever tool you use. Second, the cheapest plan that lists a GST feature may still limit the number of e-way bills or invoices. Check the limit against your monthly volume, not against a quiet month.

Worked example: three year cost for a 3 user trading firm

Take a Jaipur electrical goods trading firm with turnover of Rs 2.4 crore, an owner plus two billing staff (three users), and a single GSTIN. Prices are ex GST first, then GST is shown separately.

TallyPrime Silver first, because buyers often price it by mistake. Silver licence Rs 22,500 in year one, which includes the first year of TSS. Add TSS renewal in year two, Rs 4,500. Add TSS renewal in year three, Rs 4,500. Total ex GST: Rs 22,500 plus Rs 4,500 plus Rs 4,500 equals Rs 31,500. GST at 18 percent on Rs 31,500 is Rs 5,670. Three year cash outgo: Rs 37,170. The problem is fit, not price. Silver is a single user licence for one PC at a time. Three staff billing together do not fit Silver.

TallyPrime Gold is the correct Tally fit for three concurrent users on a local network. Licence Rs 67,500. Add TSS year two, Rs 13,500. Add TSS year three, Rs 13,500. Total ex GST: Rs 94,500. GST at 18 percent is Rs 17,010. Three year total: Rs 1,11,510.

Zoho Books Standard fits exactly, because three users are included. Rs 749 per month billed annually is Rs 8,988 per year. Over three years: Rs 8,988 times 3 equals Rs 26,964 ex GST. GST at 18 percent is Rs 4,854 (rounded). Three year total: about Rs 31,818. If the firm grows to five users, Professional at Rs 1,499 per month is Rs 17,988 per year, or Rs 53,964 ex GST over three years. Alternatively, Standard plus two extra users at Rs 150 each per month would cost less. Always price both routes.

Vyapar Desktop plus Mobile Gold, using the package figure of Rs 4,099 per year, is Rs 12,297 ex GST over three years. GST at 18 percent is Rs 2,213. Three year total: about Rs 14,510. Even if you use the higher listing of Rs 4,799 per year seen in November 2026 checks, the three year ex GST total is Rs 14,397, still the cheapest cash cost.

The lesson is simple. At three users, Zoho Standard and Tally Silver look close, but that is the wrong comparison. The honest comparison is Zoho Standard against Tally Gold, and there Vyapar is cheapest, Zoho is in the middle, and Tally Gold is the most expensive over three years. Cost is not the only test. If the CA insists on Tally and does all closing work there, the time saved may justify Gold. If the owner wants live visibility across locations, Zoho earns its subscription. If billing is simple and phone based, Vyapar's lower price is a real advantage.

Decision framework: choose in two minutes

If your CA does your closing in Tally and will not work in another tool, choose TallyPrime. Buy Gold if more than one person must work at the same time, Silver only if one PC does all accounting.

If your internet is unreliable for long stretches and billing cannot wait, choose an offline capable tool: TallyPrime or Vyapar.

If your team works from two or more places, or the owner needs live figures without asking for a backup file, choose Zoho Books.

If your turnover is up to Rs 25 lakh and invoices are under 1,000 a year, start on Zoho Books Free and save the subscription until you cross the limit.

If you are a single shop with simple stock and phone billing, choose Vyapar. Confirm the desktop plus mobile price on the pricing screen before paying.

If you need deep inventory, batch or serial tracking, or warehouse features, test Zoho Elite or a Tally setup with your actual items before buying. Do not judge inventory from a demo with ten sample items.

If you sell through a WhatsApp first process alongside accounting, plan the customer conversation tool separately. See CRM for a WhatsApp first business. Accounting software is not a CRM.

Common mistakes

Buying Gold when only one PC is ever used. Gold pays for concurrent multi user access on a network. A single operator firm wastes the difference over Silver.

Comparing a one time Tally price with one month of Zoho. Always compare over three years, including TSS renewals for Tally and annual subscriptions plus add-on users for Zoho.

Ignoring add-on users and payroll. Zoho looks cheap at the plan price and then grows with extra users at Rs 150 per month each and payroll employees at Rs 60 per month each. Count your real users first.

Assuming Vyapar desktop and mobile prices are the same. They are not. Mobile only, desktop only and desktop plus mobile are priced differently, and discounts change the first year figure.

Skipping the compliance calendar. Whichever tool you pick, filing dates still govern your month. Keep the MSME compliance calendar beside the software decision, because a good tool with a missed date still costs you a penalty.

Buying before migrating opening balances. Fix your chart of accounts, stock units and GSTIN details first. A clean migration on day one is worth more than a small discount for signing up quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Neither for everyone. Tally fits offline, CA led, inventory heavy work on Windows. Zoho fits cloud access, multiple locations and owner led books. Decide by users, internet reliability and your CA's workflow, not by habit.
